What is Hair Restoration?

Hair restoration is a medical procedure aimed at restoring hair growth and volume in areas of the scalp where hair has thinned or gone bald. Traditional hair restoration techniques include hair transplants, scalp micropigmentation, scalp reductions, and medications. One of the latest breakthroughs in treating hair loss and hair thinning is PRP for hair restoration.

How Does PRP Help With Hair Restoration?

PRP stands for Platelet-Rich Plasma and it has been proven to be an effective treatment for hair restoration. PRP is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure that involves using the patient’s own blood plasma, which is enriched with platelets, to stimulate hair growth.

During the treatment, a small amount of blood is taken from the patient, and then the plasma is separated from the blood cells. The plasma is then injected into the scalp, where it releases growth factors that help to promote hair growth. PRP has been shown to be effective in treating hair loss, promoting hair thickness and improving the overall appearance of the hair.

The Benefits of PRP For Hair Restoration

Up until just a few years ago, the only options for hair restoration were painful procedures or dubious creams and medications. This is no longer the case. PRP is now a highly sought-after treatment for hair growth and rejuvenation. These are a few reasons people choose PRP for hair restoration:

  • Non-surgical: PRP is a minimally invasive treatment that involves taking a small amount of the patient’s blood, processing it to concentrate the platelets, and then injecting it into the scalp. This makes it an appealing option for those who want to avoid surgery.
  • Quick recovery time: The procedure is minimally invasive, which means patients can typically return to their normal activities immediately after the treatment.
  • Minimal side effects: PRP has few side effects, making it a safe option for hair restoration.
  • Natural results: Because the PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood, the results are natural-looking and long-lasting.
  • Cost-effective: PRP is often less expensive than other hair restoration procedures, making it a more affordable option.
  • Proven success rate: PRP has been used for many years to treat a variety of medical conditions and has been shown to be effective in promoting hair growth.

How Does PRP Work For The Hair And Scalp?

PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) works by injecting a concentrated solution of platelets, plasma, and growth factors into the scalp. The growth factors present in the PRP stimulate hair follicles and increase blood flow to the scalp, which provides the hair follicles with the nutrients and oxygen they need to grow and thrive.

In addition, the growth factors in PRP have anti-inflammatory properties, which can reduce inflammation in the scalp and promote healthy hair growth. They also support tissue regeneration to revitalize damaged hair follicles and further promote hair growth.

Am I a Good Candidate For PRP Hair Restoration?

People who experience hair loss or thinning and want a natural, non-surgical solution may be good candidates for PRP hair restoration. PRP can be used for both men and women with androgenetic alopecia, diffuse hair loss, and alopecia areata. The best way to determine if PRP is a good option for you is to consult with a hair restoration specialist or a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss treatments.

If you’re interested in hair restoration in Newport Beach, CA, LEA Plastic Surgery offers PRP treatment for hair restoration. Dr. Goretti Ho Taghva and her aesthetic team specialize in innovative aesthetic procedures for hair loss and other cosmetic solutions.

Do I Need a Consultation for Hair Restoration With PRP?

As with any medical procedure, you should have a consultation with a licensed healthcare professional before undergoing hair restoration with PRP. This consultation will help you understand the process, potential risks, and outcomes of the procedure, and allow the healthcare professional to evaluate your health and determine if you are a good candidate for PRP.

Dr. Ho Taghva provides comprehensive PRP hair restoration consultations at LEA Plastic Surgery in Newport Beach. During the consultation, she will determine your aesthetic goals and do a thorough assessment of your medical history and current condition to determine whether hair restoration with PRP is the right option for you.

What to Expect During a PRP Hair Restoration Treatment

The PRP treatment for hair restoration is a minimally invasive and relatively quick procedure. The procedure takes place in a private treatment room at LEA Plastic Surgery.

Once you are comfortably seated, an aesthetic nurse will draw some of your blood and put it in a centrifuge to separate the plasma from the red and white blood cells. The plasma is further processed to concentrate the platelets, which contain growth factors and healing properties.

The activated platelets are then injected into the scalp in the areas of thinning hair or hair loss. This releases growth factors that stimulate the hair follicles and promote production of reparative cells to promote the growth of new hair. The whole process takes about 30 minutes depending on the size of the area to be treated.

Patients can also choose to undergo mild microneedling on the scalp, and apply Exosomes alongside PRP injections to gain optimal results for hair regeneration. Typically patients will require a minimum of three treatments about four to six weeks apart.

My experience with Dr. Ho and staff was great and the procedure was not nearly as uncomfortable as I was expecting. Everyone seemed very helpful and accommodating. Procedure was done a few days ago and I seem to be healing quite nicely, but can’t speak for longterm results just yet. Other than that, smooth sailing.

Frequently Asked Questions About Hair Restoration With PRP

Is PRP for hair restoration safe?

PRP treatment is a non-surgical solution for hair restoration that is considered safe by medical experts. The treatment involves using naturally occurring, nutrient-rich elements from the patient’s own blood, so there are no chemicals or synthetic solutions.

What does the PRP hair restoration treatment feel like?

The PRP process involves having blood drawn from the arm, which is then spun in a centrifuge to separate the platelet-rich plasma (PRP). The PRP is then injected into the scalp with a small needle. Some patients report mild discomfort during the needle injection, but this is usually brief and manageable.

Is there any downtime for the PRP treatment?

Because the PRP treatment is a non-surgical procedure, there is no downtime for a PRP treatment. After the treatment, the scalp may feel slightly sore or tender for a day or two, but this is normal and should resolve on its own. Patients can typically resume normal activities immediately following the procedure.

What are the side effects of PRP for hair restoration?

Few patients report adverse side effects from a PRP treatment. However, like any medical procedure, there is a small risk of side effects, such as pain, swelling, and infection. It is important to consult with a licensed healthcare professional to determine if PRP treatment is appropriate for your individual needs and to ensure proper preparation and administration of the treatment.

How soon will I see results?

It typically takes a few weeks to see improvement in hair growth after PRP treatment. The full effects of the treatment may start to become visible within 2 to 6 months of the initial treatment. This is because hair growth is a slow process, and it takes time for new hair follicles to develop and begin producing new hair growth.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of PRP hair restoration treatments you need depends on several factors, including the extent of hair loss, the stage of hair loss, your overall health, and the results of previous treatments. Typically, 3 to 4 treatments are recommended, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. However, some individuals may need additional treatments to achieve their desired results. It is best to consult with a hair restoration specialist for a personalized treatment plan.

How much does PRP for hair restoration cost?

The cost of PRP for hair restoration will vary depending on several factors, such as the amount of hair loss or extent of the thinning, the size of the area(s) to be treated, and number of sessions needed. Dr. Ho Taghva can advise you on the cost of your PRP treatments and payment options.
